Estimate months of runway from cash, burn, and expected revenue.
What this is
Estimate months of runway from cash, burn, and revenue. Model at least two scenarios so hiring and spend decisions aren’t based on a single hopeful forecast.
Best for
- Pre-profit startups and indie products
- Founders deciding on a hire or contractor
- Anyone preparing a simple investor update
What’s included
- Cash, burn, revenue, net burn, runway months
- Assumption notes per scenario
Preview
| Cash in bank | Monthly burn | Monthly revenue | Net burn | Runway months | Assumption notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 85000 | 12000 | 3500 | 8500 | 10.0 | No new hires |
| 85000 | 12000 | 5000 | 7000 | 12.1 | If conversion holds |
How to use
- Net burn = Monthly burn − Monthly revenue.
- Runway months = Cash ÷ Net burn (if net burn > 0).
- Model two scenarios: conservative and optimistic.
Tips
- Net burn = burn − revenue. If revenue > burn, runway is effectively unlimited for this model.
- Include founder salary in burn if you take one.
- Recompute after every major spend commitment.
